Skydiving & Popular Aircraft

Do you want to jump out of an airplane with a best friend, a special somebody or simply with others like yourself? Parachuting describes the process of skydiving out of an airplane and coasting slightly to the earth. While it may seem like flying, skydiving is a bit different. The level of security provided by having a parachute is the main difference. Your chute slows down your descent, not only making your freefall safer, but also supplying you with a beautiful canopy tour thousands of feet above the ground!

If it's your very first time you will be harnessed in with a Tandem Master! The tandem master will be connected to you by a harness through the entire experience; exiting the aircraft, soaring through the sky and landing safety together.

Wanting to know what altitude you will be jumping from?

The airplane has to get to an altitude of 10,000 to 14,000 feet before you can exit. That means, you will be jumping from almost 3 miles over the ground! This height cap is in place for your safety, any higher and you would require an oxygen mask!

You'll be instructed on how each of your parachutes are used before you leave the ground.

Your second parachute is merely a precaution. However, should the initial chute malfunction your Automatic Activation Device will trigger and launch the back up. At some locations, a "static line jump" may be used for parachute release training. During this exercise, you jump from the plane with a safe and secure line to the aircraft.

The Most Popular Aircraft to Jump Out Of

Skydivers normally jump from a class of plane referred to as "light sport aircraft" like the Cessna or Otter. These planes can accommodate a range of skydivers from as few as 4 to as many as 28. Nevertheless, light sport aircraft predominately are used for parachuting as they are much faster than commercial aircraft, often taking a load of skydivers up every 15 to 20 minutes!

Depending on the power of the engine, it could take as little as 10 or 20 minutes to climb to diving height. Unsurprisingly, the size of the engine determines how fast it gets up to this point. The faster planes, like the King Airs with PT6A-20 engines, are regarded as the fastest in the world in their ascent.

These types of aircraft can hold up to 15 people, in addition to their speedy climb to optimal height. {The King Airs, however, are only the second most popular aircraft used for diving.} The most popular dual and single engine planes for skydivers are the Havilland Canada DHC-6-Twin Otter, and the Pacific Aerospace PAC P-750 XSTOL, respectively. Common diving planes are typically powered by pistons or turbines. Turbine and piston-powered planes are separated by a key difference: turbine planes are lighter in weight and use their fuel more efficiently. While they supply a similar horsepower as a typical piston engine, crafts with turbine engines are typically more expensive.
